What can I say? I liked this book. I found the premise hugely imaginative and the characters amusing. It was well written and carefully crafted. I didn't come away with anything "profound" as such, just time spent in a world in which faery and magic were real, but gritty rather than phantasmagorical. Ignore any comparisons like "Harry Potter" for adults, think of it more as a well considered excursion into alternative history.

Embarking on a re-read, because I felt like it. (Originally I read it in 2005.)
I love the magic and the unending, unraveling supply of stories in this woman's head. Every footnote could have been made into its own novel, each was so packed with story. And of course she gets mega points for the re-creation of the dry, droll Regency-era narration. (Down to spelling it "shew" instead of "show" and "any one" instead of "anyone.")
The dry drollness was my only real issue with it, though. If anything, ...more
