Hits all the cliche tropes and imagery of Japanese horror films and manga. Drowned girls with long dark hair and dark pits for eyes who hangs upside down from the ceiling or come through the mirror or tv. Light that mysteriously go out and flash on just long enough to see a shocking sight such as a man being dragged under a bed or into a closet. Pooling blood. Claw marks appearing on walls or skin. The narration is just a mess.
In theory, it should be interesting to have a book narrated by a ghost. But in practice, Chupeco constantly jumps from first person to third person. If it's a passage that "sounds" better or has more tension being being from the the point of view of a different character, Chupeco doesn't hesitate to show it from that character. Which, in and of itself isn't an issue for me as long as it explicitly does move to 3rd person and stays there for a full scene or passage o ...more

This felt like two books. One set in the US. Then there is an awkward and unrealistic transition to Japan. This transition is filled with a lot of "stage business" to explain why and how the whole stories picks up from the US and moves wholesale over to Japan. Additionally, there is an excessive amount of exposition, of background, of conversation with the purpose of conveying background facts.
