Thrawn is definitely my favourite novel from the new Star Wars cannon. It gives us the backstory of how our favourite blue-skinned Grand Admiral came to be with the Imperial Navy and rose through its ranks. The pacing is amazing albeit sometimes a bit too fast and every chapter is prefaced with a neat snippet from Thrawn's journals, which are extremely reminiscent of Art of War.

Thrawn was arguably the best character to come out of the Expanded Universe, and I was pumped when I learned that Disney was going to re-introduce his character. I was even more excited when I saw that they were going to have the book be written by Zahn. While I enjoyed reading this book, it definitely doesn't compared to the original. One problem I had with it is that it isn't just an origin story for Thrawn. Pryce was a character that I kept waiting to have some major significance in the story Thrawn was arguably the best character to come out of the Expanded Universe, and I was pumped when I learned that Disney was going to re-introduce his character. I was even more excited when I saw that they were going to have the book be written by Zahn. While I enjoyed reading this book, it definitely doesn't compared to the original. One problem I had with it is that it isn't just an origin story for Thrawn. Pryce was a character that I kept waiting to have some major significance in the story, and she never does. I'm assuming that she is either in Rebels (which I haven't seen) or is going to be some major character in future works. Half the book was written about her and to me it didn't fit.

Thrawn was too perfect in this book. In the Expanded Universe stories, I found the explanations for his genius and strategies to be believable. In this book we seem to just be told that he is really super smart and studies art so yeah, he knows everything. (view spoiler) If Thrawn ever shows any kind of weakness, we late find out it was a strategy all along to gather information and he is actually an expert. Except for politics, for some unknown reason he is completely retarded when it comes to politics. Are we really going to act like Thrawn can spend a few hours looking at the art of a species and use this to figure out the exact strategic plans of a certain general, but he can't figure out the most rudimentary politics or human emotion? I guess there wasn't enough human art for him to study. (view spoiler)

The first person view for Thrawn was somewhat interesting at first, but it eventually just felt like Thrawn was focusing way too much on what people's throats were doing. My biggest disappointment, besides Thrawn's genius not being believable, was the absence of Pellaeon. He was one of my favorite characters from that trilogy, and although I liked Vanto, he doesn't compare to Pellaeon at all.

All that being said, I am really excited that Thrawn is back in the picture, and I hope it isn't too long until he has a movie of his own. The book is a worthwhile read for Star Wars fans. ...more

As an avid reader of the Expanded Universe before the reboot with Episode VII, it's hard not to think of the newer canon in relation to those old events. That being said this books presents a nice weaving of Thrawn and Governor Pryce's backgrounds together before their parts in the Star Wars Rebels TV show. ...more
