I have stated before some of my displeasure and annoyance with novelizations of movies. Some are decent, most are garbage. Many of them are written by Alan Dean Foster, who is a decent writer despite his predilection for turning other people's screenplays into novels. Foster has literally written several dozen novelizations of movies that you have probably seen; everything from "Alien" to "The Last Starfighter" to "Transformers".

The purpose, in my opinion, of a good novelization is to add more d

The best part of a Star Wars movie novelization is the glimpse into deleted scenes, expanded character moments, and the larger universe beyond the camera. This novel didn't really have that. It follows the scenes of the movie very closely, but doesn't really expand on it much. ...more

Includes spoilers:

Let's start by saying I love Star Wars. I've read virtually all the star wars books, legends and canon. Many multiple times. I saw the Force Awakens 3 times. Given that, this novelization was probably the worst written star wars book I've ever read. The book is full of amateur writing mechanics errors that distract from reading the story. Things such as the thesaurus of "said" and changing POV for characters in the middle of paragraph segments.

The worst offense of the book is

Alan Dean Foster captures the feel and image of the movie within the page of this book. For people who would not like to be spoiled about the ending, movie, and or other parts of The Force Awakens, please stop reading now. Star Wars The Force Awakens as a book is a very good story and does bring out small details that the film does not dive into. Foster does a great job of capturing the character's thoughts, feelings, and voice with his writing and depiction of them. As a die hard Star Wars fan ...more

As a novelization of the film, it is very true to the movie. There are some tidbits here and there that provide a bit more detail on the thoughts of various characters. If you have already seen and enjoyed TFA, it may not add a whole lot more to your experience. As for the writing itself, in the quest to make it "his" book, Foster got a bit too excited with throwing in adjectives all over the place. I appreciate an author wanting to mix up the vocabulary, but it came off overly flowery here, IMO ...more

This is one of those cases where the movie is way better than the book. Or maybe it's because I saw the movie before I read the book so my imagination didn't have to create as much information from what I was reading. The book is ok, but it just doesn't capture the story very well. I find this to be the case for most of the movie novelizations, except for Episode 3 from Matthew Stover, which was excellent. ...more

Whilst not perfect as it was driven off of the screenplay, it does fill in some holes and adds some depth. I wonder how much things would be different if the book came 1st & the film adaptation came later. Just my gut feeling I think both would have ended up much better.

Gives you so much more insight on to how characters are feeling and why they act the way they do than the movie. I am very happy with this book, and any lover of The Force Awakens needs to read it.
