Thank you, Ms. Adams, for writing this book! In my humble estimation, a near perfect futuristic erotica with all the right elements - fluid writing skills, romantic alpha male who's not an ass, spunky heroine who's neither stuck up nor stupid, solid plot line reminiscent of "escape from new york", a futuristic world that's not simply a backdrop for the sex, and of course steamy hot sex scenes that are neither too graphic nor too stilted.

Thanks to my bookstagram friends Teresa and Lubnaa for drawing my attention to this book! (Got it free on Kindle!) This is definitely a dark romance and won't be everyone's cup of tea, though it's due more to the setup than any inherent traits of any of the characters. Summary is accurate, so don't need to add much.

The story takes place in an underwater prison that is basically a free-for-all and in order to survive, Riana essentially offers herself to Cain for protection; it's a pretty crazy start and some might find their first encounter upsetting as a result, but if you suspend belief for a second and put yourself in her position and the situation, I think it's a very easy story to go along with and believe. And of course, it is a romance, so turns out Cain is a pretty terrific guy. He's definitely one of those strong and silent type of heroes, but it makes it that much more fun as you start to see hints about his developing feelings for Riana. And yes, maybe it's caveman-y, but his care for and possessiveness of her is super hot IMHO lol.

The entire story is told in third person from Riana's POV, so you don't get much insight into Cain's feelings, but is super well-done regardless and we still get a very good feel for him as a character. Especially during the ending—and oh what a lovely epilogue! A nice quick and hot read; definitely recommend!!!

She broke off her words with a jerk, belatedly remembering that she couldn't make Cain mad.

Swallowing hard, she overcame the urge to bite his head off and instead said, "You're right. There's no difference." Her eyes straight ahead, she let the tear in her shirt fall open and started walking again.

Without warning, Cain grabbed her arm and swung her around to face him. "Why the hell do you do that?"

Surprised by his burst of anger, Riana gasped, "Do what?"

"Cut yourself off whenever you have something to say." His blue eyes pinned her in place, and his jaw was clenched with obvious tension. "It drives me crazy. If you have something to say, just say it. Don't act like a mindless, passive drone."

For a moment, her vision blurred over—she was so enraged and affronted. Her hands fisted at her sides as she tried to keep herself from clawing lines down his face. "Why the fuck do you think I stop myself! Do you actually expect me to challenge you when you're the only thing keeping me alive?"

Something on his face changed. It didn't soften. She'd never seen Cain soft. Instead, his features tightened even more until his lips were pressed into a colorless line. Finally he rasped, "You think if you say the wrong things I'm going to toss you out to be torn apart?"

Book 1 in the short-story Hold series

This book just scratched ~~all~~ most of my dark romance tropes. This was absolutley fantastic and well done! I LOVE this short story! The world-building, character development, romance, and intimate scenes were all handled very well. I have already started the second book, Release.

I just fell in love with Caine, a man of few words, and Riana, an archeologist. Through crap luck they both end up on a prison planet for minor infractions by the Coalition who has one ...more

A short sci-fi spicy erotic read. Riana is sentenced to life on a prison planet. She knows the only to survive is to find her a protector. So she watches for the strongest man. His name is Cain. Not a lot of sustenance but enjoyable just the same.
