I think I'm going to really like this series...this is a easy, fast paced read with a cast of characters and beings I really liked. Mac is one hell of a young woman on one hell of a mission. I still haven't figured out Barrons but at this point I like him but not sure if I should. Ms. Moning does an excellent job of dangling the carrot to keep you pushing forward without really answering a lot of your burning questions. V'lane is someone I'd like to learn more about, what he is capable of is not ...more

This book had a slow start for me and the heroine seemed to be in denial for too long about what was happening around and to her. And I'm not a big fan of first-person stories that are telling me what's already happened; I like more immediacy in my stories. Additionally, the author made some curious choices about which scenes were summarized and happened "off page"--in a number of cases, it seemed like more boring scenes (where the heroine is thinking by herself) were happening on page and more ...more

3.5 stars. Definitely an interesting story with great world and character building. Some parts got long in the middle, but that's to be expected for a first book in a series. But my issue is that as a rule I don't enjoy stories that pile questions upon more questions without answering them. Quite frankly I don't want to think that much--I just want to be entertained. I'll likely continue with the series if for no other reason than just to have those questions answered. ...more

I won't rate this book because I skimmed it. I started reading, but there is a lot of descriptions and pages upon pages of the main character just doing her own thing without any dialogue, so I ended up skimming. I like the relationship between Jerricho and Mac, but the folklore wasn't particularly interesting.
That being said, I'm intrigued enough to skim the next in the series :)
