I never thought I'd see the day where L.K. pens a true anti-hero, but in Tempt Me at Twilight she does just that.

Harry Rutledge falls for Poppy Hathaway the moment he meets her. She is already involved with another man, Michael Bayning, and plans to wed him. From the moment Harry meets Poppy, he decides that she will be his under any circumstances. He is ruthless in his pursuit, and employs tactics to make sure that all obstacles to having her are removed. Eventually he gets desperate and "traps I never thought I'd see the day where L.K. pens a true anti-hero, but in Tempt Me at Twilight she does just that.

Harry Rutledge falls for Poppy Hathaway the moment he meets her. She is already involved with another man, Michael Bayning, and plans to wed him. From the moment Harry meets Poppy, he decides that she will be his under any circumstances. He is ruthless in his pursuit, and employs tactics to make sure that all obstacles to having her are removed. Eventually he gets desperate and "traps" her by intentionally compromising her to ensure her cooperation in wedding him. Harry possessed true moral ambiguity when it came to securing Poppy as his wife. It was disturbing.

This book reminded me of the book Gone With the Wind. Dashing Rhett Butler becomes obsessed with Scarlett while she fancies herself in love with the dud Ashley Wilkes. Similar themes run through this book. Harry and Poppy's marriage starts out very rocky. Poppy was trapped and manipulated into a marriage that, at first, she does not want. She is clear from the beginning of their marriage that she will never love him, and uses her feelings for Michael against Harry. At one point, I felt as if I was watching a horrible nightmare unfold. I wondered how I would ever make peace with either one of these characters.

Then all of a sudden.....Harry started to get to me. His past was slowly revealed, and his desire to protect and care for Poppy started to penetrate all my misgivings about the first half of the book. This is a story of a relationship that begins like a hurricane, and then takes the rest of the book for the seas to calm. Tempt me at Twilight feels different than any of the other Hathaway books (and for that matter any other Kleypas historical), but now in retrospect, I love that it's different.

Poppy really was exactly what Harry needed, and he knew it. She allowed him to rest and live for the first time in his life. His obsession and devotion to her was obvious, and when Poppy finally forgives him for his past behavior and opens her heart to loving him, this book is launched into the 5 star keeper realm.

Can't wait to continue this series! Miss Marks and Leo are up next. The chemistry between those two is enough to set a house on fire:) ...more

The magical writing that I've come to love is back 100% with this book! With a hero who is an insensitive jerk at times, damaged from when he was a boy, with money but not much else. So not what I was expecting for our sweet Poppy Hathaway, but oh so perfect!
