Shades of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #7) in Dangerous Hero Addict Support Group

This latest installment in Lara Adrian's "Midnight Breed" series is leaps and bounds better than the last one, IMO. I could barely finish "Ashes of Midnight" but I could barely put this one down.

Kade is one of the newer members of the Order. He was introduced a couple of books ago as a new recruit along with Brock. At the time I felt it was a rather obvious and awkward effort to bring racial diversity to the crew. I still feel that way. Not that I object to the end result. But their introduction This latest installment in Lara Adrian's "Midnight Breed" series is leaps and bounds better than the last one, IMO. I could barely finish "Ashes of Midnight" but I could barely put this one down.

At the time I felt it was a rather obvious and awkward effort to bring racial diversity to the crew. I still feel that way. Not that I object to the end result. But their introduction was so purposed that it left me not really caring about either one of them. It felt like they didn't come organically into the story. I didn't think I would care much about Kade in his own book.

However, Adrian's template always take the lead couple away from everyone else so we can get to know them individually as well as see their chemistry. Then the others are brought in and the group chemistry is explored. I think this is an excellent template, and I'm generally not a fan of plot models. Getting to know Kade this way, I fell pretty quickly and deeply in love. And I liked Alex quite a bit, too. Still grieving her father's death and feeling completely alone, she's thrust into a situation that not only reminds her of her beloved dad, but threatens to expose secrets she's kept for over a decade.

Kade has his own secrets and problems. Born and raised in Alaska, he and his twin brother inherited a talent from their mother that can potentially translate to a curse. This brings up a haunting story line about which I'll say no more to avoid giving spoilers.

As I've said before, when Adrian is on she's ON. And I think she's bringing the mojo in this book. The love story really worked for me and was extremely sizzlin' as well. Despite an unfortunate anti-hunting vibe (not the specifics, but an overall negativity toward the topic which is far more complex than typically portrayed anywhere in media) Adrian's really in fine form.

Brock's story is next and it looks like some of his story is already being set up in this book. If it is, I see major complications down the road for our giant friend. There are lots of possibilities for his story that should make speculation fly until the next book comes out.

One last note. In my review of "Ashes" I mentioned that I was worried Adrian was going to take Chase down the Phury road. There's a scene that tells me I may not have been whistling Dixie on that concern although it might be just an odd coincidence. However, if she sticks to the template (I can't believe I'm supporting that but I am) we'll get to really know him and whoever his HEA might be.

"Shades of Midnight" was an action-packed, mystery-laden, strong romance that was very well written, and had a very strong storyline that carried through from the first page to the last!

Alex is a bush pilot in the small Alaskan wilderness who makes a shocking discovery on her way to deliver supplies to local townspeople outside her small town of Harmony. With a past laden with pain and tragedy, she is unprepared for the carnage she sees in the snow laden area.

Kade is a Breed warrior working for "Shades of Midnight" was an action-packed, mystery-laden, strong romance that was very well written, and had a very strong storyline that carried through from the first page to the last!

Kade is a Breed warrior working for the Order based in Boston when he is summoned to investigate the brutal murders happening in the Alaskan wilderness. Kade has been trying to escape his past and his Alaskan roots for over a year and is not pleased nor prepared for what awaits him aroung the small town of Harmony.

Both Kade and Alex have secrets and pasts that go way beyond painful, but together they must come together to find out what is happening in the Alaskan wilderness and try to stop the murders completely. They both have to be careful with the desire and need that is growing between the Breed warrior and the human pilot before the lines between good and evil, right and wrong become blurred lines, shades of midnight.

I have to give this book a 3 1/2 star rating because overall I really enjoyed the book as a whole, but some of the story just kind of fell flat for me! I have never read anything by Lara Adrian, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Midnight Breed series and was surprised at how much I really did like her style of writing and the world she has created. I really liked the idea of the Breeds as a race and not just the typical "vampires" I've become used to reading about. Although this is the seventh installment of the series, I had never read any of the other books, and I was very pleased to find that I was not too confused or lacking anything in this particular story. Granted, I have missed a lot of background leading up to this novel and will have to go back and read the previous novels, but I will be happy to backtrack and find out what I missed.

"The Order", a group of vampires that are each gifted with a particular sense or skill, work together to ensure that humans unknowingly are protected from the enemy, a Gen Two vampire named Dragos, who has his own plan for death and destruction. Sent to Alaska to remedy the current situation is Kade, a sensitive and honorable fighter that was once a native of Alaska...but due to personal family issues, left Alaska to join "The Order" a year ago. He and Alex meet, and their connection is immediately electric. The two of them together create some igniting sparks that make the pages of this novel sizzle. How the situation in Alaska is put to rest involves a few extra members of "The Order" along with Kade and Alex who are desperate to stop a killer that is out for "blood" literally. Some little surprises appear on the pages that lead to Alex's understanding of just who she really is and what she is capable of. A novel that was mostly predictable while the relationship between the two main characters was steamy and erotic. Another great book by the talented paranormal author, Lara Adrian!!!

I really like this series so was surprised that I was a little disappointed in this one and not really sure what the cause of it is. I think that maybe it is the couple themselves, they just didn't quite cause me to care a whole lot for them. I found I was more interested in Kade's story with his brother than that of him and Alex. I liked seeing him go home and the interaction with all of his family. Even the hunt for the Ancient and Dragos wasn't all that interesting in this book. Hopefully the ...more

I liked this book. The setting in Alaska was different and I enjoyed the relationship between Kade and Alex and learning more about Kade's family. Also, for some reason, every time I envision the Ancients, they look like they should be in the movie Predators. ...more
