Darkfever is a perfect example of why I seldom DNF a book, even using the ‘100 page rule’.

I love Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series, so I was really looking forward to finally starting her Fever series, particularly after seeing all the positive talk and reviews over the years. So imagine my surprise to find this, the first installment in the Fever series, less than enjoyable - at least to start with.

So I tried to read this book when it first came out, and it just didn't work for me. I got one or two chapters in and bounced out. A friend recently re-recommended it to me and told me to give it a second chance, and I did. It was also free on the Nook for a time (rock on, Nook!) so I snagged it and read.

Jericho, the mystifying impeccably dressed alpha-male with dark hair and eyes, is hiding secrets concerning a Dark Hallow book, the Sinsar Dubh, that belonged to the highly advanced race, Tuatha De' Danaan, that came to Earth from another world. As to who Mac and her sister really are and the secret mystery surrounding their existance, intrigues Jericho as he sets out to help Mac further unravel her sister's attempt to recover the Sinsar Dubh. The novel was an introduction to the world that author, Karen Marie Moning, created involving the paranormal world of fae that are Seelie(Light Court) and Unseelie (Dark Court). An intriguing encounter between two strong and passionate characters (Mac and Jericho) that are both entertainingly caring and intense in their own way during their quest for survival while looking for the truth behind the evil that lurks around every corner of the Dark Zone in Dublin. I enjoyed this novel immensely and am looking forward to immersing myself amongst the pages of the next installment to the series, Bloodfever.

If I could, I would give this a 4.75 stars. This is my first experience with Karen Marie Moning and I really, really enjoyed this book. Mac is an intereting and unique character, and the "fever" world is a very refreshing change of pace from what I have read in the past. The only issue that I had were the constant reminders of Mac's appearance of an obsessively Pinkalicious/Legally Blonde kid. With one voicemail message MacKayla Lane's world turns upside down. Alina, her beloved sister is dead and the message Alina leaves behind for Mac could not have made less sense. With it, happy to live the simple life Mac finds herself drawn to Dublin, Ireland, the place of her sister's murder, and into a mystery that leaves more questions asked than answered.

I read this one because a Shannen recommended it. It's one of her favorite series (is her favorite?). Anywho, Mac is hilarious throughout the book. The only thing we really have in common is her pride getting in the way of things and her need to show people she's the boss, even when she's not. I liked that about her.
