It pains me to say this but this book was *just ok* for me. I've had this on my TBR since forever! I will admit to my ignorance and say I didn't pick it up sooner because I always thought the series was YA, so it kept getting pushed back. Then someone explained to me that it's UF and it sparked my interest again.

So when we created the UTC Immortal Reading Challenge it seemed like it was finally time to read it as my fae books.

Now I finally realized Karen Marie Moning is on the New York Times Bestseller List! She is one of those authors that just blow you away with their writing that you come back hungry for more and more. I have to say that this was my very first Adult Urban Fantasy Series and my all-time favorite. Karen throws us in a world of that I would love to explore to the fullest. Mackayla Lane has just lost her sister in Dublin. When she arrives she finds out that everything is not as it seems and her world will change forever.

Darkfever centers on fae, but not those sweet innocent fae like Tinkerbell, but fae to their darkest, even more darker than you can possibly imagine. The last message from Mackayla's sister was about the Sinsar-Dubh and how Mackalya must find it at all costs, that is when she encounters Jerricho Barrons, he is a total ass, but one of those bad-ass guys you just want all to yourself. Barrons helps Mackayla on her quest in his own way.

At first it took me a little bit to really get into this book, and when I did I could not stop reading. I had become addicted to the FEVER! Mackayla Lane is described as the pretty barbie doll, but she is a lot tougher than people give her credit for, through the book Mackayla becomes one of the strongest heroines that I have ever seen in action and she fights for what she believes in. I truly believe by the end of the series that she will become someone both physically and mentally strong.

Jerricho Barrons. Oh, my love. I love this guy. At the beginning of the book, I admit he was a complete ass and he is very intimidating at times, but I love him! He is tough, knowledgeable, arrogant, rude, and all the above, but by the end of the novel I truly believe that there is another side to this man than we realize. He is such a mystery that I NEED to know more about this guy. And when I say mysetery I mean it in a way that will drive you crazy. Barrons is after the Sinsar-Dubh and makes that very clear, but what will he do with it when he gets his hands on the book? The both need each other for their own agendas.

We also have V'lane, our Fae Prince. His top priority is his queen , but V'lane and his queen need Mackayla to find the Sinsar-Dubh also. I don't really know what to think of V'lane as of yet, he seems like one of them that don't really care for Mackalyla until he gets what he wants. We didn't get much of V'lane, but I hope to find out more of his characters in the next book. Darkfever has a formidable cast of characters that you can't help but love and want to learn more about their pasts, what kind of power are they capable of, and what exactly their agendas are.

So basically Darkfever is one of those series I can say why hadn't I read this book sooner? And yes, when of those series where I read each book back to back without stopping because I became addicted to the series. Darkfever has twists and turns that will leave you breathless and craving for the next book in the series. I am looking forward for book 2, Bloodfever and hope that it is even better than Darkfever!

I really wanted to like his one because I love her Highlander series, but I just didn’t like the characters. The world building was wonderful and KMM’s imagination is definitely rich. I love all the lore and fantasy she weaves into her stories…. BUT the two main characters: MacKayla & Barrons were just not likable for me.

Mac is shallow, vain, immature and just plain annoying. Her character is mainly concerned with how her outfit matches her accessories even though she went to Ireland to find he I really wanted to like his one because I love her Highlander series, but I just didn’t like the characters. The world building was wonderful and KMM’s imagination is definitely rich. I love all the lore and fantasy she weaves into her stories…. BUT the two main characters: MacKayla & Barrons were just not likable for me.

Mac is shallow, vain, immature and just plain annoying. Her character is mainly concerned with how her outfit matches her accessories even though she went to Ireland to find her sister’s murderer. When your biggest concern is that your pink nail-polish does not match your outfit, or you’re heartbroken because you have to cut your hair to hide from the beasties that will gobble you up, it is REALLY hard to believe that you are totally grief stricken about your sister’s death. I’m also annoyed at her continuous and vehement denial of the world she finds herself in. She now knows for a fact that there is evil out there that will destroy the world as we know it, and that she is one of the only ones who can stop it, yet she keeps saying things like “I’m not a ‘save-the-world’ kinda girl…. Let someone else do it…. I’m just gonna kill the guy who murdered my sister, and the go home to Georgia… let someone else worry about the fact that there will be hell on earth soon”. Yeah. Okay. Cause we know that it won’t be coming to Georgia!! I’m sorry for the rant, but I think she is such a twit.

Barrons could be likable, but I have no connection to him and KMM left him so vague that my only opinion of him is that he is mean. There were no redeeming qualities, and the characteristics that would make us love him as a ‘bad boy’ just aren’t there. He is just mean, and abusive. The entire time he is doing things to help her, the only thing you can think is ‘sure, because you need her to further your own cause’. At this point I would not believe him if he confessed that he liked her and that’s why he kept her safe.

And the ending just sucked. I think the whole book felt like an advertisement for the next one. Reading it was like watching a long trailer to an upcoming movie. No substance or any resolution to MANY things that would have grounded the book and the plot. The first person narrative style that KMM writes in, with the flashing back and forth and explaining things later, really pissed me off. Mac would be going up to bed at the end of a chapter – the next chapter would start with her waking up the next day and recalling that on the way up to bed, Barrons stopped her and they had a deep conversation about something. KMM would go into the details of the conversation at that point, and I would forget the Mac was just ‘remembering’ it and she had actually just woken up. It was very annoying.

While I loved the world KMM created in this book, there isn’t anything else I did like. I am struggling with the decision whether to read the next one, and may give it a chance since my rule is to not judge a series by the first book – but this book may change my mind about that.

Mac Kayla “Mac” Lane had a comfortable life in her small town with her family and worrying about nothing more than her suntan or what to wear the next day. Her world changes forever when she receives a telephone call telling her that her sister has been killed in Ireland. Mac decides to travel to Ireland to find out who killed her sister, almost as soon as she arrives her troubles and danger start.

Mac stumbles upon Barrons Books and Baubles after wandering the dangerous deserted streets she late Mac Kayla “Mac” Lane had a comfortable life in her small town with her family and worrying about nothing more than her suntan or what to wear the next day. Her world changes forever when she receives a telephone call telling her that her sister has been killed in Ireland. Mac decides to travel to Ireland to find out who killed her sister, almost as soon as she arrives her troubles and danger start.

Mac stumbles upon Barrons Books and Baubles after wandering the dangerous deserted streets she later learns are the Dark Zone. Here she asks about the “Sinsar Dubh” which her sister told her she had to find. Although initially extremely unhelpful, understandably so we come to learn later, events conspire to force Mac back there where she begins to discover what it means to be a Sidhe-seer.

Mac grows as a character so much more than I expected her to from our introduction to her. She turns out to be smart, tough and able to look after herself (all be it with a lot of guidance from Barrons). I liked how she was able to be some much more than her “Barbie” type looks.

Jericho Barons is a difficult character to weigh up, he is very secretive and there is clearly much more to him than meets the eye. He is Mac’s main source of information and safety as well as the subject of attraction bubbling under the surface. Barrons is hot, mysterious, sexy and dark, in other words exactly what we like in an alpha male in urban fantasy. I’m looking forward to more Barrons in the rest of the series!

The Unseelie Fae are the stuff of your nightmares! The descriptions of them are hideous and I really never want to meet them. The Seelie Fae on the other hand are as attractive as can be, I won’t say any more as I’m trying to be spoiler free!

The world building in Darkfever is woven wonderfully into the story, an intriguing and exciting world has been created by Karen Marie Moning that will hook you in. The mythology of the world is seamlessly woven into the story.

If you like kick ass heroines and an alpha male who is mysterious, hot and more than a little difficult at times then Darkfever is probably for you! Thrown in the wonderful setting of Dublin and you can not go wrong in my opinion.

I really enjoyed Darkfever and will definitely continue to read the series. I am looking forward to reading Bloodfever (look out for a review sometime soon) and am going to try to pace myself so I’m ready to read Shadowfever when it’s released early next year!

So i hated the first chapters..i just could not get it at all...however i continued due to some recommendations by some in my reading group, and i can honestly say i am loving it more as i move on.
The author is frustratingly GREAT!!!!...^_^

The world building and characters are unique to Karen Marie Moning

Barrons is insanely HAWT!!! (in-a-not-good-for-me-way) lol...or maybe he will as i read the next book hoping that SOME sexual release happens *crosses fingers* ...more

I've had this book in my to be read pile for the longest time and for some reason or the other, I've just been putting it off. I've only read one other urban fantasy book, and unfortunately, that was an incredibly slow read which only deterred me from starting this book. But, I did give it a shot and I couldn't stop reading until I knew what happened to Mac.
