Oh-kay... By now I would've though I've seen pretty much everything that is there to haunt a hapless reader: unthrilling thrillers, books written badly enough to read them aloud for dare, mangled histories and fiction gone bonkers. But nope, that's not all. Here goes a new one: a boooring spy novel.

I am slightly over half way finished. I lived in Europe for a number of years and got completely hooked on "spy books." The best at the time were the "Smiley Books" of LeCarre. They were full of the darkness of the world of spies and double agents, moles, betrayals, and expert tradecraft, and true believers, patriots. And LeCarre portrayed it better than most if not all. And like I say, I was hooked.

The recipes at the end of each chapter are REALLY ANNOYING!!!! I spent more time focused on the food and less on the action. Are you a cookbook or a spy novel. Pick one!
We read this for our book club and while the action was okay, I think this is going to be one of those rare books where the movie will actually be better. There were so many characters in this story that it was hard to keep straight.

An excellent spy novel set in modern times with New Russia, the twisting tale of a mole inside the SVR, his CIA handler and the honey trap set by the Russians to find the mole. Excellent twists and turns as the major players loyalties are tested and they deal with the realities of politics in the modern age. Excellent read.

Fantastic spy thriller that can't be put down. Matthews takes the time to provide lots of background info, developing his characters far more fully than in many other works on this genre. He also deftly uses the cities in which the action takes place as characters, especially Helsinki.
