Echo burning has a slow build in the story and this felt intentional. Jack Reacher hitches a ride from Carmen Greer who wants Jack to help her with her abusive husband who will be getting out of jail soon. We get to know Carmen, Ellie (her daughter), the Greer's (Carmen's in laws) while Jack spends time on the ranch. There are sporadic bits of action between he character development which helped with the pacing of the story.

I enjoyed this book very much. It was my first Jack Reacher novel and the first I’ve read by author Lee Child.
The plot was unique in a few aspects compared to others I’ve read in this genre. Mainly, it wasn’t about the former Navy Seal good guy against some Muslim extremist set on destroying the world and was I ever happy about that. Those story lines are a dime a dozen, cliche, and to me, demonstrates an author’s lack of imagination. This book didn’t offer any of that redundancy (save the fact ...more
