This story seems hard to read when you consider the premise. But beneath the violence, brutality and greed, there is sympathy for the main character Katniss. Life in Panem is not fair, and Katniss's instinct for survival has brought her through childhood as the family's protector after her father's death. She is not cruel, but forced to apply cruelty to save herself. A hard thing for her emotionally, but when she is paired with Peeta at the Hunger Games, she faces even more difficult issues. She

The idea of the story is a crude yet captivating idea of the future North America - now called Panem, it's been split into 12 Districts and is ruled by the harsh and cruel hand of the Capitol. I would probably give this book a 3.5 rating. I thought the premise of the book was original but I think this book is written for a younger audience and I doubt that I will read the other 2 books. EEWWW!!! I wasn't thrilled with the premise--fight to death -- reality tv --- government control of lives--but I had agreed to read it and tried to do so with an open mind--BUT---EEEWWWW!!! Well written and holds one attention and becomes a page turner but what kind of person am I to want to read about kids killing kids for sport and glory of their "country" for lack of a better word? Would I recommend, probably not based on my opinion of the subject matter.
