I know, I cannot be pleased. In a nutshell A Storm of Swords is mainly political affairs, plotting and betrayals with a hint of thousands wildlings with swords and battleaxes. Oh, the dead rise, too. Also, Martin really gets on with killing the characters, probably he realized they were too many and had to make room for others. I think the third book was a lot more gruesome, everything and everyone just seemed crueler more brutal than ever.

Even though I liked the book as a whole, I feel like I hated most of it, too, and not just because the Starks keep dying. The absence of the Greyjoys was a welcomed sight, I did not even care what happened to Theon or the rest of them. The only person I could not care less about is Brienne. I seriously do not understand the purpose of her character and with every passing chapter she annoys me more and more. I think partially this is why I started liking Jaime now, when I could not stand him in the first book. Arya’s neverending journey is not helping the book either, it is starting to drive me crazy, it is the same damn thing for the past two books.

Of course, there were also some good things, mostly towards the end of the book. I really liked the battle with the wildlings and everything that has happened around Jon Snow, he has really grown throughout all this. And now I know why he knows nothing. Another thing that I have not mention before but I very much enjoy is how Martin uses memories and retrospective intertwined with his character’s thoughts, or the narrative, to provide more detail in a scene. I like it that a chapter does not start where the previous one left off, but the reader is rather taken to a further point in time and is only later informed about what has happened in the meantime.

My new favourite quote is “The man is as useless as nipples on a breastplate.” It reminds me of Batman and Robin and I chuckle quietly to myself. I mean, who wouldn’t? ...more

Story wise it was on par with 'A Clash of Kings'. I wouldn't describe it as fascinating but apparently it was engaging enough to keep me reading and give it a 4-star rating. To be quite honest I don't think any of the books would ever have the same effect on me as the first one. As for here I truly got into it somewhere towards the end.
