I finished this this a few days ago, but because I already started A Storm of Swords, I felt it would be best to share my thoughts and impressions now, before everything becomes a mess in my head.

A Clash of Kings is undoubtedly a worthy sequel, although I must admit it was not what I had expected. Based on the title, I had in mind that it would mainly focus on the war and most scenes would take place on the battlefield. A Clash of Kings is undoubtedly a worthy sequel, although I must admit it was not what I had expected. Based on the title, I had in mind that it would mainly focus on the war and most scenes would take place on the battlefield. However, to my surprise, it turned out that the central theme were the behind-the-scenes preparations the “kings” made for the war, the alliances they created or bought, and the usual amount of backstabbing and conspiring against each other with a pinch of magic. The victories and defeats were only mentioned in letters or rumours with the exception of the last few chapters. Now that I have finished it, I am not sure whether I liked this or not. Just like everyone else I appreciate a good action battle scene, swords clanking and arrows flying everywhere, but then at the same time I feel like it would have become tedious if every second chapter focused on a battle. (I’m sure the second season of the show will them all look awesome and slow-motion-y.)

Now, without the King and his Hand, the whole realm is divided and at war. The Baratheon brothers are fighting each other, the Lannisters are trying to keep the throne, Winterfell is destroyed by a turncloak, and death reigns in Westeros on both sides of the wall. The predominant feelings in the novel are fear and despair. Every time something nice happens for a character and they get to be happy for a moment, it is followed by something terrible which completely shatters their hopes and dreams. Also, George R.R. Martin continues his tradition to kill off a number of characters and to introduce new ones at the same time (refer to the GRRM formula).

It was definitely interesting to see how all the plans and schemes unfold in the process of the war, but I wanted to see more of the Others and all the wonders beyond the wall, and I felt like Arya’s misfortunes were really dragging out, but then again if they were not, it would have changed so many things. Overall, I liked it very much and I’m curious who will attack Westeros fist, in the midst of all their fighting, Mance Rayder or Daenerys. Oh and who else is totally loving the dragons? ...more
