For me books by Mario Vargas Llosa have more inner sense in their construction and plot than books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (more magical realism).

The Feast of the Goat shows a fictional story of Domicana's tyrant and people around him presented from few points of view. Definitely must-read from Latino-American literature. ...more

I picked this up in preparation for a trip I was taking to the Dominican Republic, partly because I desperately needed to practice my Spanish, and partly because it takes place during the Trujillo dictatorship, an infamous era in Dominican history of which I knew very little about. I had never read anything by Vargas Llosa, so I had no expectations—and I was blown away! I couldn’t put it down.

I almost gave up on this one thirty pages in. What a mistake that would've been.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao was a chilling introduction to the Dominican Republic under Trujillo; this novel was like getting battered over the head. Incredible. ...more
