For me books by Mario Vargas Llosa have more inner sense in their construction and plot than books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (more magical realism).

I picked this up in preparation for a trip I was taking to the Dominican Republic, partly because I desperately needed to practice my Spanish, and partly because it takes place during the Trujillo dictatorship, an infamous era in Dominican history of which I knew very little about. I had never read anything by Vargas Llosa, so I had no expectations—and I was blown away! I couldn’t put it down.
