"Bird by Bird" is more of an inspirational book for those trying to or already writing creatively than an instructional book on writing. Within those confines, it's pretty good. Every time the book verges on becoming too spiritual, Lamott undercuts that sentiment with a judicious use of the F-word. Much better than a book it's sometimes recommended alongside, Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones," which I couldn't finish.

the book gets way better after a few chapters. in the beginning i found her metaphors and similes really dumb; like she was trying way too hard to be funny. but eh, i like her now...maybe i started reading the book with a bad attitude and she warmed me up. she is pretty cool and i like her advice, i still have about 50 pages to go.

hmmm. Solid, practical, everyday advice to writers....it's worth checking out but I gotta admit to a little impatience with Mrs. Lamott's constant reference to her church/religion...
