I must really be a punctuation nerd if I read this while on vacation. But I trekked it with me to the beach and loved it. It reminded me of the early years just after college when I wasn't afraid to plunk down a semicolon--until those sniping newspaper editors cleared me of that habit. Now I'm inspired to bring back the lovely semicolon and think a little bit before using the dreaded dash. I highly recommend this book.

Very accessible and helpful, especially the (short) parts that point out the differences between American and British grammar. And quite amusing; it's nice to know that there are other grammarians out there!

Simply, a book about punctuation. The history, misuse and creect use of all our little symbols. I found the book rather useful in terms of explaining why and how to use each mark. This book could have been under fifty pages if all that we wanted were the rules of punctuation, but the origin of each punctuation mark was often interesting. But I loved Truss' (or would that be Truss's?) passion for the subject and I definitely love that she walks a fine line between being a grammatical prescriptivist and descriptivist. It's the same line I find myself walking, unsure which way to fall.
At the very least, the book encouraged me to be more open when I see punctuation errors. ...more

I can't say enough about this book. I love it! I am such a grammar nerd, so this book was practically written for me. Anyone who's ever been tempted to carry around a red pen, correcting strangers' grammar on the street, should definitely read this book.
