[close] ODYSSEYA is a well written, beautifully paced account. What sets it apart from other accounts is: what it’s like to leave one's country and take up a life in another, far from ones roots and its well-read author's attention to detail. The writing is often so well balanced that the author is able to intimate the breathtaking history of the Russian people in a way that is always engaging and regularly fascinating. Vassilieff provides readers with some extraordinary detail without losing them in too much data.

Some questions of mystery will arise to the reader:
* Why did the author's father, at the end of WWII while in Shanghai China and formerly an escapee from a Soviet GULAG come back into harms way of the NKVD only to be incarcerated again".
* What mystical power had saved Harbin in Manchurian China three times from bombing - First the Japanese then the Soviets and finally the Americans.
* How will the life of a baby girl born in a bomb shelter in 1944 Berlin during an allied bombing raid intertwine with the author who himself was born during WWII in Japanese occupied Shanghai.
Just as an earlier chapter titled "A Miracle" and several others will fascinate the reader how unknown forces at times protect us when all else seems to be falling around us.
