Frankly, as a piece of literary fiction, it's pretty uneven and doesn't really stand up. As a record and insight into Douglas Adam's wit, style and worldview, it's great. Glad I finally got around to reading it.

I don't have the emotional attachment to this book that I have with the Guide. (Oh nostalgia is a fine thing in small doses.) But I think it ended up my favorite. The characters are wonderful and DA's creativity really shines with the rain god and Dirk's navigational methods, etc.

Fascinating second Dirk Gently book. Wish there could have been a third. The god of guilt is perfect for the 21st century!
