The second book in the Thursday Next series provides more literary fun for those who are into that kind of thing.
Thursday's exploits in Jane Eyre have made her a bit of a celebrity, which means she has to make regular appearances on TV. Not everybody likes her, though; a mysterious foe keeps trying to kill her, her husband of one month has been eradicated from history and if that weren't bad enough, her time-travelling father tells her Armageddon is at hand.

I actually give this 3.5 stars. Story-wise, I enjoyed it better than "the Eyre Affair". It was less complicated and so more attention could be had on the myriad of facts and trivia that Fforde jams into each book. One doesn't need to have read "Great Expectations" before reading this book, although I would recommend having read "The Trial" (Kafka) prior to this one.

Like most other readers of Fforde's works, I find him to be very clever in the way in which he writes, and in particular, his play on words. But beyond that, I find his plots to be lacking, and in fact, rather dull. I have the next two books in the series at home so at some point I'll probably read them, but it will once again be a long while before I get to the next one.

Fforde's a master of wordplay and extremely well read. The puns and literary references are only a part of what makes this series so enjoyable though. I love the story, the suspense, and the characters as well.

I didn't like this as much as The Eyre Affair, but I like it enough to read the rest of the series, especially since this one ended in a cliff hanger.
