I re-read this book at age 51 and definitely appreciate it more now than I did when I was a teenager. I'm tempted to up my rating to 3 stars, but really for me it is still just OK, so 2 stars it shall remain.

I do think it is a good book for analysis and discussion. And it is also a quick read, which is a plus.

Well, this is a "classic" and comes highly recommended, but it didn't appeal to me at all. First of all, there was no real story, other than this boy who was kicked out of school spending a few days in loitering about. He had no ambitions, no hopes or dreams, and not much to recommend him. It is touted as a great "coming of age" novel ... however, I don't know people who come of age the way he did. What sets Catcher In the Rye apart is the confessional quality of the narrative. There's an immediacy and urgency to the story, told in first person, as we witness Holden Caulfield struggle to hold his thoughts together. I wish I had re ...more

This is the first classic I read. I was a freshman, and was intrigued by it because my junior class friends had to read it as a requirement. I ended up reading it in a day, with some difficulty, but loved it.

Honestly, this book receives way too much hype. It really didn't intrigue me very much, and I often found myself daydreaming whilst reading. I didn't like the profane language. But I kind of felt like I could relate to the main character because I overanalyze things and I am semi-pessimistic.

The book was mediocre at best in my opinion.

I read it long time ago but yesterday I found someone reading it at a cafe in Manhattan and I wrote a small blog entry on the same.
