Anna Karenina is a far more complex, tragic character than Emma Bovary, yet Madame Bovary always gets called a great novel! I prefer Anna Karenina. She isn't insipid or snivelling; she is aristocratic and caught in "an impossible situation" when she must choose between the love of a handsome officer and the loss of her young son if she tries to leave her unhappy marriage to an older man.

Absolutely brilliant. This dauntingly long but completely accessible tale about love and social constraints encompasses the major events in the course of a human life. Tolstoy's insights, about everything from the smallest misunderstanding to the question about the existence of God, are wise and well put. One quickly grows fond of his characters, and my favorite thing about 'Anna Karenina' would probably be the author's empathetic observations on what goes on inside their minds. The best novel I
