I first read this aged eleven and was instantly transformed into a Bronte fan. It was the cadence of the language that got me right from the first sentence which, I seem to remember, was about the rain. - There's an awful lot of rain in the North of England!
Then, there was that oppressive atmosphere, the civilized but icy treatment of orphan Jane by her guardian. Everything in the story makes you empathise with the emotional isolation of this sensitive and gifted child.
