Absolutely amazing.....I loved it! Wilkie Collins was vastly underrated. In my opinion, it's a must read for anyone who loves classics and has not yet read it.

The reading of this ebook at Internet Archive wasn't an easy task the first time I've read this book.
The BBC dramatization gave another great opportunity to enjoy this masterpiece written by Wilkie Collinns.
From BBC Radio 4 Extra:
Dramatisation of the Wilkie Collins classic, one of the first mystery novels, first published in 1859.
1/4 A chance meeting with a strange woman dressed in white sparks a mystery.
2/4 Still thinking fondly of Walter Hartright, engaged Laura grows suspicious of her fiance ...more

I read this novel for the first time in its abridged form when i was young. This time i was lucky to find the complete novel, and it was a very enjoyable read.
Certain things were amusing: It is nice to read about people who "dress for dinner", the ladies who "retire" to the drawing room while the gentlemen smoke or have a drink, they "keep a diary", and they send written messages to other persons in a distant town which can reach them in a few hours!
Other things were less amusing !

I read this book some more than 10 years ago, and I remember that I loved it at the time. The multiple-narrators technique and the plot are both very intriguing. Collins is also quite a witty writer.
Looking over the text generally now, I feel like I might have missed something deeper that Collins would have been trying to say. I would give this book another try sometimes. I remember enjoying it very much and recommending it to friends who also enjoy it. As soon as I done with the other 1001 boo ...more

I really enjoyed this book. It's twists and turns were suspenseful and surprising in some instances. The characters memorable. Marion, with her loyalty, wonderful memory and instincts, weak Uncle Fairlie with his constant shouting of "my nerves", and the charismatic Count Fosco(what a great villian)!
The writing style was intriging to read, almost like a courtroom drama played out on the pages. I'm glad that I perservered through this book. I would recommend it highly! ...more
