A classic must read. So hard to comprehend "owing" someone. It truly shames me that something this vile has ever touched the American ppl.

By today’s standards the book is sanctimonious and patronizing and the comments about the characteristics of people of the "negro or African race" make it sound as if we are dealing with a different species altogether. But put in its historical context, and bearing in mind how fundamental religion is to American society, it was admirable and heroic what the writer tried to do, just a bit too much preaching to my taste.
