James' peerless novella builds in intensity due to perpetual ambiguity and postponement. The wordings are far from straightforward. Then again, neither are the narrator's thought processes.
The very last paragraph reminded me somewhat of the shot of the wobbling top at the end of Nolan's film 'Inception' - concluding the narrative, yet potentially drastically changing your interpretation.
