One of the first Newbery books I ever read. This is a favorite from my youth!
Love this little book. It is very much like reading the Little House on the Prairie.
First of all, I saw here that I'd read this book before, which came as a surprise to me! Unfortunately, it was no Anne of Green Gables. The effort to paint Indians as mostly "good" people comes off as arrogant and ignorant. The family is not memorable or even that likable. I suppose the test of time has also had an impact here.
