De Avonden/The Evenings is the repetitive, cynical story of how Fitz van Egters, a young man who's lost all hope in life, fills his evenings between Christmas and the New Year, two years after World War II has ended.

Gerard Reve's debute was all the rage when it came out in 1947, translating the feelings of fellow writers of his generation. It did indeed feel to me as a topical novel, not like a timeless classic. The stress on food can for one be explained by people stil remembering the 'hunger ...more

Mijn plan was dit boek te lezen tussen Kerst en O & N, om voor de hand liggende redenen.

Als de bedoeling van het boek was de saaiheid van de limbo tussen K en O & N te beschrijven, dan is dat gelukt.
Daarnaast bij vlagen grappig, en onsmakelijk. Soms beide.
