I liked the book until around the 70% mark. Then the ridiculous murder mystery plot took over and spiraled into absurdity. I wonder how empty the British prisons would be if intrepid heroines did not solve crimes in their spare time. Especially given how inept the detectives seem to be.

I was hoping to see more of a character study or even a struggle for Beth adjusting to marriage with Ian in the second half.

I liked that Beth stood up for herself with Hart several times.

Ian spent part of his childhood in an insane asylum. He is very intelligent (he remembers everything, among other things), but very socially awkward (he has Asperger's). Ian helps his brother, a Duke, when it comes to reading documents, etc. Beth was happily married before her husband died. After his death she was a companion to an older lady. She becomes a heiress when the companion died.

Ian is one of the most unique heroes I have ever read. He is in love with Beth and I adore their love story.

My taking several days to finish this book had less to do with the book than something giving me a lovely allergy induced headache for a couple of days. Hard to read with the lights off and your head buried under a pillow. Anyway...
