In which clever yet apathetic Holden Caulfield gets kicked out of his fancy academy, goes to New York City, and does stuff.
If I read this between the ages of 12-15, I probably would've loved this - since I was going through an Angry Depressed phase then, I feel like it would've ~spoken~ to me back then. At 20... well, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it, either. Yes, Holden's annoying and messes up a lot, but I found him almost endearing. What can I say? It had been over 40 years since I first read The Catcher in the Ryeso it was like reading it for the first time. I am sure I totally related to Holden when I was 17 but 40 years later I could enjoy all the characters as an outsider looking in. Salinger's style of telling the story in open train-of-thought was quite radical at the time, but he draws you into the phobic thoughts of Holden Caulfield so that the reader can almost predict what direction the storyline will take.
