Fresh language. Lots of Spanish. Read it on the Kindle which I would not recommend (lots of footnotes, and on Kindle v.1.0, it is very difficult to toggle back and forth between the main book and footnotes).

Not sure that I would call this a Pulitzer Prize caliber novel, but it was very different and very interesting. Lots of Spanish (enjoyable but if you don't speak Spanish you would miss a great deal) and a lot of Dominican history and culture woven into an otherwise not terribly fascinating plot. The history of the Trujillo era and the culture were definitely the best part, and perhaps the use of language. Characters and plot not outstanding. Certainly worth a read. ...more
