Librivox can be hit or miss, but this version (read by Nick Bulka) is excellent. Mr. Bulka did a truly professional quality job with the book, complete with certain singing passages and characterizations for the different voices. Overall, the book is a wonderful period piece that feels fresh even 135 years later. Very enjoyable British humor and humor of the A Confederacy of Dunces anti-hero sort. The book traces a boat trip of the three men -- Jerome, George, and Harris, along with the dog Mont ...more

It is always with some apprehension that I read a book so universally praised. There is such a danger that high expectations will be too much for it. However, "Three Men in a Boat" is every bit as good, funny, and relaxing as I thought it would be, and I love the interesting little historical comments as well. Some of the writing reminds me of the modern humorist, Patrick F. McManus, for example, the use of ambiguous pronouns to lead you to think he's talking of one person, but is in fact talkin ...more

I read this book while reading Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog since her book was heavily influenced by this one. While it helped me understand Willis' book better, Three Men in a Boat is great all by itself. I was laughing out loud repeatedly. I love the writing style and sense of humor and could see myself reading this again when I need a good laugh. ...more

It didn't strike me as funny as I thought it would be. And after about 100 pages, the repetitive silliness of the characters got to me. Lots of descriptions of the countryside and the English history that played out there.

There were a few surprisingly melancholy moments: the bit musing on the nature of nighttime and the medieval-like tale about the Forest of Sorrow then later the short sequence about the poor woman found drowned and her story of social ostracism.

What a delightful romp through British waterways with three curmudgeons and a fox terrier named Montmorency.. I loved the description of going through the Maze at Hampton Court.
Just as amusing second time around.
