A solid book. The imagery and angst-filled relationships (romantic and filial) made this book super compelling. I don't have much to praise about it that hasn't already been said better by other reviewers.

I absolutely adored Ifueko's writing style in this, especially in the first part of the book where it felt almost like folklore. Her use of song was especially beautiful! The world building was also fantastic with so many different cultures, religions, traditions, and clothing. I wasn't as big of a fan of the angst/drama and how much action there was towards the end (plus some poor decision making by the characters), but I like my stories more gentle and quiet, so that makes sense. There is a large cast of characters involved in this book, and some of them are implied characters that are never named. Due to the many characters, it was hard to keep track of everyone, plus there wasn't enough of some of them.
The characters that we stayed with had quite the rollercoaster of a ride. There were several time jumps, each about five or so years, taking us from childhood to young adulthood. Is it wrong that I want more of The Lady's story? It would be fascinating to have the story ...more
