Not very many novels, let alone a graphic novel, stir up a visible emotional response from me (for example: something might be funny but I'll rarely laugh out loud.) This book, however, made me cry within the first 15 pages. Now, that's an accomplishment! I'll admit though, I'm a bit of a softy when it comes to moms or husbands dying, so your mileage may vary with that.

3.5 Liked, but didn't love this one. It was very cute and had a nice quirky streak, and the art was great, but it just felt like something was missing. Might give it a reread sometime, though, to see if I get on with it better, and will probably give the next volume a try.

I was reminded a bit of spiderwick while reading this. I really enjoyed the story . I find that I'm going to have a hard time waiting to read the next one. I like that right off the bat the herion of the story (who is a young girl) Is strong, brave and tries to do whats right. I think it has just enough twist and turns to keep me reading, but it's not so vague I lose interest.

This feels like it should be a video game or a cartoon à la Avatar: The Last Airbender. The world is highly imaginative, the illustrations beautiful. The dialogue is sparse - I think this is definitely aimed at preteens/kids. The plot was a simple quest with plucky girl, cute, sparky little brother, helpful companions (robots and stuffed animals!), etc. It was cute, it was pretty, but in this volume there was not much substance.

This is the first book in the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi. I had heard good things about this series, and we finally checked it out from our local library.
The story is dramatic and engaging and the illustrations are amazing - scary and dark, but not too scary for kids. ...more
