This book is one of the many reasons why I'm so delighted with GoodReads. I'd been browsing through the website, saw this book on a side panel, and after reading the synopsis, checked it out through my local library.
I was inordinately amused by the author's candid revelry in her own geekiness, and deeply enjoyed the way in which trivia, research, stories about her friends, family and herself were woven into an exploration of American history.

The historical information was interesting, but the book itself was lacking. There are so many tangents some of which are informative and interesting, others were pointless. I don't think sharing her political opinions helped tell the stories. The humor worked sometimes and other times was pretty off-putting. It feel like Sarah Vowell didn't know exactly what she wanted this book to be, it was all over the place. I didn't enjoy this book as much as I was hoping.
