I adored this book - as readable and fast-paced as an average Harry Potter. The djinni has just the right amount of snark, coupled with intelligence and cunning. Thank goodness, since at least one of the main characters needed some common sense.
I definately want to read the sequels. I am hoping that the kid will outgrow his more annoying traits as he ages. Regardless, I would enjoy reading them just for Bartimaeus' commentary (and footnotes)! ...more

This was an engrossing read.
The characters were not the traditional heros- not as like-able as I would usually prefer, but very interesting. The story is fast-paced and occasionally humorous. The source of magic is a bit different than in most fantasies.
Definitely recommended.
