Towles sophomore novel begins in 1922 Bolshevik Russia, after the revolution that brought an end to the Russian aristocracy. Count Rostov has been proclaimed a ‘former person’ by the authorities and sentenced to live out the rest of his life in a tiny room on the six floor of Moscow’s Hotel Metropol. Another tour de force from the author of The Rules of Civility<. This time we have Count Alexander Rostov who, in 1922, is declared a "non-person" by the Soviet government and sentences to serve out his life under house arrest in Moscow's Hotel Metropol.

Every effort is made to humiliate the count: he is given a minuscule room in the hotel's attic to live in, he is mad a waiter in the hotel restaurant, and the hotel's manager uses small acts of cruelty to wear him down. But the Count never loses

This novel engaged me from the first pages. All the details, plot developments, characters, and surprises were a delight to read. I laughed out loud, I sighed, I stayed up late to keep reading--all signs of a book I will re-read again and again over the years. One of the best in modern fiction.
