[close] This is my absolute favorite series, for so many reasons. What a lot of people don’t know when they see this book is that it is a Cinderella retelling. I didn’t know that when I first went in reading but now that I know I can see it. This is a phenomenal YA fantasy. Celaena, the main character, is powerful and compelling. She’s an assassin coming out of slavery when this book starts. Her journey within the book is astounding. She’s one of the strongest female characters I’ve ever read. The plot will keep you on your toes and leave you aching for the next book in the series. I cannot recommend this series enough.

Second reread and I still only liked it. The Assassin’s Blade has given me an idea of Celaena’s past however, and I found I did like it a lot more this time around. I was able to empathize with her more, as I’d gone with her through so much in Blade. She’s clearly hot-headed, foolish, and brash, but I find her realistically flawed and admire her unwavering strength and dedication to justice and peace. Second reread and I still only liked it. The Assassin’s Blade has given me an idea of Celaena’s past however, and I found I did like it a lot more this time around. I was able to empathize with her more, as I’d gone with her through so much in Blade. She’s clearly hot-headed, foolish, and brash, but I find her realistically flawed and admire her unwavering strength and dedication to justice and peace. Maybe I’m a poor judge, but I find her so refreshing in comparison to most YA girls. She’s not afraid to get what she wants and she’ll use whatever she can to get it. None of that “shy but super hot special girl” crap here. Just a broken and honest heroine looking for her freedom. We need more of this in YA!!

Unfortunately, I do have complaints and my main qualms were the romance and the lack of world-building. We see a lot more action, character development, and world development in The Assassin’s Blade, that just didn’t shine through here. There were several scenes that didn’t seem to add to the story and the pacing was a bit slow throughout. Nevertheless, I do feel things are about to get a lot more exciting soon and I’m eager to start Crown of Midnight! I’m also keen to see more of Celaena’s growth and how she’s recovering from betrayals and coming to terms with being a slave to Adarlan once more. Her character is continuing to change as we’ve progressed, and I really want to see her find some inner strength and get some sweet retribution for both the loss of Sam and the loss of her freedom. And Farran??? I really hope we see more of him, simply because I want him dead. 😭 That’s Maas’ biggest strength, in my opinion. She’s created incredibly fleshed and engaging side characters who have their own agendas, hopes, and plans. They’re not just there to advance the plot or mindlessly add to the drama. From Farran and Arobynn to Nehemia and Chaol, the King, even Nox (!) each has a role to play and I’m invested in everyone’s outcome.

....Dang, I did not need all this unnecessary stress in my life, yet here I am, worrying about the fates of my dear fictional friends. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Oh, well! I’m excited to read more, as Maas has created a dark and violent world with believable, heartfelt characters and magnificent world-building that I really feel is going to shine in the rest of the series.

Overall, Though Throne of Glass is a bit romance heavy and the plot can plod along at times, there’s huge promise for more action to come and I find the characters and world (what we’ve seen in TAB, anyways) to be well written and captivating. The promise of magic and hints to Celaena’s past also kept me reading and cannot wait to learn more about our dear heroine. Despite the few troubles, I am enjoying the series and will be recommending it, though I will suggest starting with Blade first simply because it showcases Maas’ skills more effectively. Now. I’ve got some serious reading to do! Onto Crown of Midnight! 👑🌙⚔️ ...more
