I enjoyed Paulette Jiles' Enemy Women and this book, set in post-Civil War Texas is even better Captain Jefferson Kyle is a "new reader" in North Texas. He travels from small town to small town and reds news storied to people without access to a newspaper and/or don't have the ability to read. One day in Wichita Falls, he is approached by a trader he knows who asks him to take a 10-year old girl who had been kidnapped by the Kiowa Indians and recently freed to her relatives just outside San Anto
