I loved the Narnia series as a child, my book The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was much loved and thumbed through. I read it as a delightful fantasy only realising in late adolescence that while C S Lewis had borrowed from many mythologies that the central tenet of his book was that Aslan was Christ. My feelings were perhaps not quite as negative as Philip Pullman, whose acclaimed fantasy series His Dark Materials was written as critical response to The Chronicles, but I do agree with J K Ro

A very simple Christian story where Jesus gets to be a lion. Conceived as a CofE parable this retelling of the testament dwells more on the muscular Christianity of Empire than the Mediterranean focus on pain. And yet the child characters and the echoes of WW2 (sensibly enhanced in the movie) remain excellent children's writing.
