Jacoby does a great job presenting information thoroughly, but as one reviewer (Eric) claimed it was like "slogging through a swamp". I will have to agree. As mentioned, this is a thorough book, delving deeply into the history of the battle of religion against secular/freethinking in the United States, one which is unfortunately still alive. R. A bit of a slow read. Judging by others reviews I wasn't alone thinking this.
I did find this book very informative and interesting. Particularly interesting is to see how the tide of secularism and fundamentalism have tended to ebb and flow throughout U.S. history. Also the role that Freethinkers played in so many social advancement and civil liberties movements. ...more
