I had had this book recommended to me a few times but really didn't know what to expect when I picked it up and I have to say, I was blown away. There is something about Emily St.John Mendel's writing style which is both bleak and yet draws you in and on through the story. I loved the exploration of a post-apocalyptic world which was spookily plausible and the fact that it looks at what we really need and want as people: to feel those connections with others.

This was definitely not what I was expecting going in. I enjoyed it, but found the ending slightly unsatisfying. I feel like there were some parts of the novel that I still don't understand why they were focused on in relation with the story as a whole.

3.5 the best way I could describe this is a dystopian that's more character based than plot driven, therefore quite a slow read. Not saying that was a bad thing, it was just not what I was expecting. It started off promising and fast-paced, but it took a slower direction.
