Dexter is such a strange protagonist...as serial killer that only kills the "bad guys" and at the same time, has somehow landed himself a position with the law. He's very aware of his tendencies, but at the same time, struggles to understand "who" or "what" he is. I like him--certainly wouldn't want to KNOW him--but I like him as a main character. He's got a great sense of dry humor that did a nice job lightening the mood of the story--especially after a particularly gory scene.

The story DID dr

Original, snarky, and thoroughly self-aware, this is great beach-reading material. Fan of the show might be disappointed, since I think the plot is similar to the first season (I am not a fan of the show). I never got into the show, but was reading this for my Mystery Book Club, and can understand more the draw to the character. He really is smart, and loves what he does--every little bit of it.

Yeah, the characters are kinda cardboard, the use of dream imagery a little bit of a cop-out, and the

I really enjoyed this book. After watching the first season of "Dexter," though, I couldn't get Michael C. Hall out of my head as Dexter. Oh, well. He's charming.

The book was really enjoyable, even if you haven't watched the show. The book is similar to the first season in some ways, but strays from the storyline or changes it in other ways. Dexter is a witty (even overly-witty at times) blood-spatter investigator in Miami who becomes haunted and hunted by a serial killer who murders prostitute

This is probably one of the most bizarre books to come across my desk as the attractively ghoulish protagonist is a sociopathic murderer. The bizarre part comes in when we learn that this is a sociopath with a “conscience”. Dexter himself narrates as a hyper self-aware and brilliant blood splatter expert. When a series of murders leaves Dexter feeling both incredibly intrigued by this new discovery and anxious about helping the only family he has, his foster sister Deb - a Miami cop. I very much ...more

Good solid thriller, very original protagonist and concept, read through this very speedily..not sure whether to give it 3 or 4 stars as it was a while ago now I read it.
I enjoyed the darkly comic tone of the book, and the suspense as you cheer every time Dexter is NOT caught or revealed.
Have been loving the TV series based on this book, Michael C. Hall is a fantastic Dexter, and I feel they did a great job bringing his world to the screen. Hmm, must find out now if the sequels are any good...

I have to say that I didn't like this quite as much as I liked the show. I've only watched the first season so far so maybe I'll feel differently about the other books since I won't have the comparison factor going on. The book was probably less farfetched that the show but I still enjoyed it more. ...more

The show is actually better (a rarity)

Lacks suspense. What else is important in a thriller? Nothing.
