What Members Thought

I cannot put into words how much I loved this book. It has been a very long time since I have felt so totally immersed in a story and its characters (to the extent that I even dreamed about them). It is a wonderful story, beautifully written/translated and I highly, highly recommend it.

I love epic family sagas, and so this one was sure to be a hit with me. There are all the highs and lows that one would expect, although there were probably more lows in this one. Love, betrayal, wealth, poverty, social unrest, and everything in between.
As much as I enjoyed this, it wasn't quite a 5 star read for me and I can't put my finger on why. Perhaps I felt just a little detached while reading it, given that the story is told from the point of view of one of the late generation f ...more
