I think it's pretty tough to live up to Miyazaki's work, but Diana Wynne Jones managed to hold her own. She has her own beautiful way of rendering magic, which is complemented well by the adaptation. I obviously had expectations, and depite there being a lot of different things and some unfamiliar nuances of the characters in the book, there were also many familiar things that made me smile. I wasn't sure how many stars to give this book and initially thought three stars but the last chapters and especially the end was just so good I had to give it four instead.
The world and comedy and drama is so well executed and I might have to revisit it some day. ...more
