Short review: Wow! What an amazing book! I can't believe Leigh Bardugo managed to fit this world, all these characters and their story arcs, and such an intense plotline into 465 pages!

Really loved this book - it was nicely different from the bulk of fantasy fiction. Looking forward immensely to the sequel (it does end on a bit of a cliff hanger), and also picking up the original Grisha trilogy.

I really wanted to like this more. I felt it was a bit difficult to follow in the middle of the story. The ending leaves off on a cliff hanger so it does make me want to read the second one, but only for some closure. I didn't feel attached to the characters. They just seemed so flat. Overall, it was fine. I liked it enough to probably read the second one. ...more
