This book is absolutely delightful. I was hyped for this book after the crow characters stole every scene in the Netflix show and it didn't disappoint.

Six of Crows is a vast improvement over the original Shadow and Bone trilogy (which I enjoyed but had a number of critisicms for). I've been sitting on thos review for a few days and I can't think of anything to fault.

Bardugo's gift for banter is on full display here. Each character had a distinct voice and dynamic with the other 5 members of the Dregs gang. Each pairing, be they romantic or platonic, is so endearing that I can't pick a favorite.

The world building is fantastic. The characters all come from different cultures within the Grishaverse and they explore cities and countries that had only been hinted at in the original Ravka-based series. I hope this continues, because the other countries are a blast. Much like Ravka took a lot of inspiration from Russia, the other countries in Bardugo's world are inspired by Amsterdam, Norway, Ireland, China, and Romani culture. The diversity lends a richness to her world that makes it infinitely more interesting

The flaws that I criticized in Shadow and Bone are gone here. Not a love triangle to be seen for one thing. The three romantic pairings all have completely different dynamics from each other. There's the old friends/war buddies who only really trust each other and could be something more. The sworn enemies to lovers. The bickering comrades who learn to respect each other and can't stop flirting. Each pairing is interesting and complex, without the tedious complications of love triangles and jealousy (looking at you, Siege and Storm).

The inconsistent theming is gone as well. In Rise and Ruin, I was annoyed that the ultimate message of the story (power corrupts) didnt gel with the beliefs/actions of the characters. Six of Crows does not have this problem. Perhaps because it isn't a Chosen One narrative, the characters are far more complex and the themes of greed, freedom of choice, and trust all gel with the character's actions. Each of the characters has their own reasons for joining the heist and their own wrongs to atone/avenge. No more forcing a moral on to the characters.

And on top of all that, it's a genuinely fantastic read. The characters are fun, the banter crackles, the action is tense and the heist is a blast. I can't wait to read the next one!. ...more

AAAAHHH I LOVE IT!

The characters are so freaking awesome and unique I love them all so much! And the plot is epic and it made me actually laugh at some parts and completely stress out at others it was great.

Really loved this book - it was nicely different from the bulk of fantasy fiction. Looking forward immensely to the sequel (it does end on a bit of a cliff hanger), and also picking up the original Grisha trilogy.

I really wanted to like this more. I felt it was a bit difficult to follow in the middle of the story. The ending leaves off on a cliff hanger so it does make me want to read the second one, but only for some closure. I didn't feel attached to the characters. They just seemed so flat.
