I started out thinking I would end up liking this book better than I did.
The writing is pretty good, the story has an interesting premise. Where things started to sour for me I guess has to do, yet again, with the fact that that this is the first book in a series and not a complete story on its own. Everything here seems like backstory, building up for the next installment. If you are looking for a literary world that perfectly blends fantasy and science fiction together, The Fifth Season is a perfect selection. The world N.K. Jemison presents in this novel is strange and captivating while at the same time feels familiar. Whether it's the landscape, the people, or the powers used, the author describes everything so well that it's easy to visualize and understand without feeling overloaded with information or lost in unfamiliar lingo. Absolutely outstanding fantasy.
Took me a little while to settle into the world NK Jemisin has built but once I did I was happy to be swept along with the characters & the story.
Highly recommended.
