I wonder if this would hold up, now that I realize he lifted so much from The Good Soldier Švejk and Journey to the End of the Night. Not to mention you think of it as an anti-war novel at first, but of course it's really a boomer attack on authority, which is not the same thing.

This seminal work of fiction carefully straddles the line between character-driven comedy and loss-laden war drama, set in the chronological middle of World War II. The moments of levity come from the seemingly bizarre motivations of the characters (a testament, in my opinion, to the terrible mental health of the average soldier), but these moments are rather chaotic and simply serve to veneer the nefarious intentions of a host of powerful people.
