I reread Dune in anticipation of the Denis Villeneuve movie that's supposed to be coming out soon. The last time I read it was at least 20 years ago so most of it was essentially "new" to me. The biggest thing that stood out to me was Paul's role as a Chosen One, foretold of in prophecy. He basically goes through the Orientalist trope of a "civilized" (white) guy who goes to an exotic land and masters it better than the locals, even becoming their leader. Short answer: Dune is great! It's not a story about the characters or the science, it's a story about a place. There's been a huge amount written about Dune because of its respected place within the sci-fi genre. There's a *lot* to critique about it, but it's on par with Lord of the Rings in telling a fantastic epic in a fleshed-out and enthralling world. I enjoyed it, and I think it's well-worth reading. I read it in a week and *wanted* to keep reading.

Dune, a book that lives up to all the hype. No world in all of science fiction can match the imaginativeness and coherence of Arrakis, the empire, and the forces that put them into conflict. A tear down of the white savior trope that can only really be understood fully if one follows it up with the sequel, Dune Messiah.
